Leo Bowers, MD
Born and raised in Suffolk, Virginia Dr. Bowers
graduated from Windsor High School and earned a scholarship to Colby College in
Waterville, Maine. There, he pursued a bachelor’s degree in Biology. After
graduation, he attended the Medical College of Virginia (now known as the
Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Medicine). During his third year
of medical school, his focus became clear and so he pursued additional training
in the field of Family Medicine. He felt drawn to a field that allowed him to
take care of families. While at medical school, he married his college
sweetheart, Leslie and together they had three children. Once he graduated, he
joined the staff of St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio to complete
his medical residency in the Family Medicine.
After completing his training, he returned home to Virginia to settle in the city of Hampton. For five years, he practiced Family Medicine in Hampton and Smithfield and Emergency Medicine in Norfolk yet, he wanted more. He wanted to provide individualized care to patients. He wanted better continuity of care both in and out of the hospital. Consequently, he decided to establish a small community family medicine practice in downtown Hampton where he established Old Hampton Family Medical Associates. During this time he served on several committees in various health care organizations/hospitals. He even found time to serve on numerous community service projects, most notably, Health Care for the Homeless, a mobile clinic for uninsured patients in Hampton Roads. All his children have pursued careers in medicine. His oldest daughter, Jennifer, a graduate of Eastern Virginia Medical School currently serves as Assistant Chief Medical Examiner in Roanoke, VA. His son, Brandon, completed his medical training as a Physician Assistant at Eastern Virginia Medical School’s graduate program. And his youngest daughter, Jessica is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. Both his son and younger daughter have joined him as Associates of Old Hampton Family Medical Associates.
Today Dr. Bowers continues to see patients in his office, at Hampton Sentara Careplex Hospital and as clinical director of Sentara Nursing and Rehab facility.
